Before the MCU, Marvel brought one of its darkest heroes to life in Blade (1998), a groundbreaking horror-action hybrid that paved the way for modern superhero films. Directed by Stephen Norrington (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) and written by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight, Man of Steel), Blade follows the half-human, half-vampire “Daywalker” Blade (Wesley Snipes – Demolition Man, White Men Can’t Jump) as he wages a one-man war against the vampire underworld.
Alongside his grizzled mentor Abraham Whistler (Kris Kristofferson – A Star Is Born, Lone Star), Blade takes on the ruthless and charismatic Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff – True Detective, Somewhere), who seeks to unleash La Magra, the Blood God, in one of the most memorable finales in comic book cinema. Iconic moments include the legendary opening blood rave club scene, Blade’s unforgettable line “Some motherf***ers are always trying to ice skate uphill,” and the explosive showdown that cemented the character as a cult icon.
Also starring N’Bushe Wright (Fresh, Dead Presidents) as Dr. Karen Jenson, Donal Logue (Sons of Anarchy, Gotham) as Quinn, and Udo Kier (Suspiria, Flesh for Frankenstein) as Dragonetti. Aaron Alexander & Tara Erickson react to, review, and break down the stylish action, martial arts sequences, horror atmosphere, and Blade’s lasting influence on Marvel and the superhero genre.
