Kathy Whitworth - Part 3 (The Later Majors and Career)
The all-time leader in U.S. Tour wins with 88 LPGA victories, Kathy Whitworth takes us down the home stretch of her career from the 1970's forward beginning with her win in the 1971 LPGA Championship at Pleasant Valley CC. Her sixth and final major win came at the 1975 LPGA Championship at Pine Ridge Golf Course. In 1981 she was the first woman to pass the $1M mark in career earnings and in 1982 she tied and then beat Mickey Wright's record of 82 wins. Kathy fondly recalls her experience as the Captain of the inaugural Solheim Cup Team in 1990 and looks back on many of the great players that she enjoyed competing with. Kathy fondly recalls winning the final two regular editions of the Titleholders event held at Augusta C.C. and the last Western Open after which, in 1968, there were only two majors to compete for over the next nine years. World Golf Hall of Fame member and the winningest player on any Tour ever, Kathy Whitworth, begins her remarkable story by sharing how she came to the game of golf at age 15 using her grandfather's clubs and how the local pro, Texas Golf HOF member Hardy Loudermilk, provided early guidance before sending her off to Austin, Texas to see the renowned teacher, Harry Penick. These two men shaped the game of Kathy, who turned professional in 1958 and joined the fledging LPGA Tour the following year. She recalls the tough times she endured before finally cashing a check at the Land of the Sky Open and reaching the winner's circle in 1962. Lee Trevino - Part 2 (The 1968 U.S. Open at Oak Hill)
World Golf Hall of Fame member Lee Trevino takes us back to three very important U.S. Opens in his career, the 1966 Open at Olympic Club for which he qualified and won $600 for a 54th place finish, the 1967 event at Baltusrol where a 5th place showing earned him $6,000 and playing privileges for the rest of that season, and the 1968 U.S. Open at Oak Hill where Lee won his first major and becoming the first winner ever to score in the 60's in each of his four rounds. Interspersed throughout are stories that are vintage Trevino including three putter tales and examples of how generous he was in helping his friends" on tour. Lee Trevino - Part 1 (The Early Years)
Six-time major championship winner Lee Trevino begins his story with a few hilarious tales involving him and Bruce Devlin before he takes us back to his humble upbringing in Texas. Raised by his mother and grandfather, Lee was self-taught as a golfer but undisciplined as a young man. Entering the Marine Corps at age 17 was a life-changing experience for Lee and it wasn't until age 23 that he began to take the game more seriously. He hadn't heard of Jack Nicklaus when the PGA came to the Dallas Athletic Club in 1963. Qualifying for the 1966 U.S. Open at Olympic Club provided him with an opportunity to see elite players first-hand. We finish with Lee and Bruce speaking about their good friend David Graham and the origin of his nickname, "DOG."
