The World of Eora: an Avowed + Pillars of Eternity Lore Podcast

The World of Eora is a news & lore podcast about the fantasy setting created by Obsidian Entertainment for their cRPG series, Pillars of Eternity, and their action RPG: Avowed.

This week, with the kickoff of the 2.0 update for Avowed, I started a brand new save file and found myself some of the unique quaterstaves in the game. Then I got to wondering - "why might there magical staves in Avowed and not in Pillars of Eternity" (from a lore perspective). So I put my thinking hat on, worked through some of the lore and actually came to realize some interesting things about how magical items might work in Eora.

This week's (delayed) episode was *supposed* to be about the Barbarian class and their rich history, etc etc. However it turned into a look at how emotions can affect the soul, and what that means for the world at large. This episode is more of a "questions rather than answers" kind of episode, but fret not - there is still some lore that we can sink our teeth into.

This week's episode is a deep dive into one particular order of Monks within the world of Eora. Monks in this world use pain as a way to embolden their soul to perform the superhuman feats you see in the game; and in the lore, some monks have interesting approaches to how they utilize that pain to achieve "enlightenment".

This week's episode focuses on Quarterstaves and Rods, both are weapons we see in the Pillars of Eternity games. I'm focusing on them because the next weapon to be updated into Avowed in February is apparently a quarterstaff, but also might be related to magic. So to cover both bases I'm talking about both today.

This episode features lore found in two unique weapons, and a bit of a dive into the Concelhaut spell "Parasitic Staff".

This week is an unorthodox episode. I don't discuss a lore topic so much as I discuss a form of roleplaying in video games that I've enjoyed since I was a youth. At the time I didn't have a name for it, but as I grew I began calling it "algorithmic roleplaying", which some have asked me about.
