Note: This episode was recorded before the cancellation announcement for The Boroughs.

In this episode of Dreamspace, Phil and Sydnni return to talk all things The Dark Crystal, reflecting on the enduring patience of the fandom, and why Age of Resistance may have arrived just before its perfect cultural moment.

They discuss how the world of The Dark Crystal continues to find new audiences, the legacy of Will Matthews and Jeffrey Addiss, and their latest Netflix series The Boroughs. The conversation also explores recent Dark Crystal merchandise, questions around officially licensed apparel, the Chamberlain mask from Bit Bot Media, and the wider resurgence of fantasy and sci-fi puppetry in films like Project Hail Mary and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Plus, Phil and Sydnni share their continuing hopes for the future of the franchise and why now might be the perfect time for The Dark Crystal to make the world in its light once more.

This interview contains SPOILERS for The Boroughs!

Sydnni welcomes back writers and showrunners Will Matthews and Jeffrey Addiss to discuss their brand new Netflix series The Boroughs.

In this conversation, Will and Jeffrey talk about how their work on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance helped lead to their collaboration with the Duffer Brothers, the origins of The Boroughs, and the process of creating an original sci-fi adventure about aging, time, monsters, memory, and found family.

They also dive into building the show’s “Gray Rebellion,” writing older characters as heroes rather than punchlines, the real world inspirations behind the retirement community, working with an incredible ensemble cast, their cameo in the series, and the production’s sustainability efforts.

The Boroughs is out now on Netflix.

From bidding drama and surprise emails to shipping a seven-foot prop like a priceless artifact, this is a true collector’s quest, and a win for the entire Dark Crystal community.

We also talk about fandom, storytelling spaces, tabletop gaming culture, and why it matters that this legendary prop will be displayed publicly for fans to experience.
