Digging out after a winter storm, this episode of Turn Me On, Dead Man explores psychedelic music with a clear sense of place.
Mindbloom’s Bocal Session keeps the amp tones raw and the drums punchy, aiming to capture exactly what happens at their shows, right down to naming the venue in the album title. The episode opens with Flying Moon in Space, who recorded immer für immer inside Kinett, a former cinema in Leipzig described as “alive and hungry,” a chamber big enough for six musicians to stretch out and let ideas develop in real time.
Environment shapes the sound elsewhere, too. The Heavenly Bodes write directly about Penryn and The Falmouth Hotel in Cornwall. The Space Huns shifted from a rural rehearsal space to a more industrial setting and felt the change in atmosphere.
