Fresh from a huge theatre round of 'The Spy Who Came In From The Cold', Ralf joins Pip for a long overdue chat which seemingly goes off on a bunch of tangents, but on closer inspection you'll hear how connected each strand really is. Of course a huge section involves acting and the science behind the performance (or more accurately, how to portray a role while not losing touch with your own brain), but elsewhere there are great angles involving the upcoming 'Hunting Alice Bell' and where the story came from, working with David Baddiel, the all seeing eye of Simon Pegg, getting into and out of Twitter storms, the mental clarity one can achieve by simply putting the phone down, expectations of various societal groups and mansplaining the 'Me Too' movement to a non-male acquaintance. Hopefully you will have caught his perfect video reaction to being nominated for an Oscar, which is of course well overdue but greatly deserved, or maybe you will have read about or even seen his new film ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’. In either case, if you have missed those, by all means CATCH UP with the quickness. But you will surely know Richard for his many varied performances throughout his illustrious career, which will DEFINITELY include the classic ‘Withnail And I’. That is a given. Add to that his star turns in films and shows like ‘LA Story’ (which forged a lifelong friendship with Steve Martin), ‘Girls’, ‘Game Of Thrones’ and a good four decades more, and there you have it. A carved in marble filmography of a true superstar right there. Covering everything including that Oscar nomination, the collaborative nature of film, how a testosterone-charged set is not always awesome, the grey area of memorabilia, the importance of casting directors, his booze allergy (believe it or not), his Swaziland origins, making theatres when he was kid and right up to the habit he shares with Pip of wearing two watches, it’s a packed episode.
