The Witches of Letters: A Supernatural Rewatch Podcast

In this episode Joy, Laura and their guest Wally from The Wally Verse break down season 5 episode 22 of Supernatural “Swan Song”. It’s the season finale and Sam and Dean face off against the devil! Sam sacrifices himself to save the world, with help from Dean, Cas and Bobby.

We discuss how this show deserved so much more recognition than it did for the writing, acting, set design, everything; Jared’s mirror acting; how Lucifer should not have kept the horseman rings; and the ending of the episode and what it means.

We also discuss the dynamic of guilt in the show, how everything comes full circle with the story line, and if John’s parenting actually helped Sam and Dean become the men they are and made them able to save the world.

In this episode Joy and Laura break down season 5 episode 21 of Supernatural “Two Minutes To Midnight”. Sam and Dean defeat the third horseman pestilence to gain his ring, and Bobby sells his soul to Crowley so he will help them find the final horseman Death.  Dean finds Death in Chicago and he offers his ring to Dean on the promise that Dean will make sure Lucifer is trapped at whatever cost, even if it means losing his brother.

We discuss Death’s introduction scene and if it was better than Cas’ introduction, Dean’s reaction to Death being one of genuine fear, and Laura is confused about Cas’ loss of angel  powers.

We also discuss whether Pestilence got less screen time than deserved, in comparison to all the other horsemen; Bobby being able to walk again; and Joy has to explain what Sam’s plan actually is to Laura.

Joy’s Easter eggs are about the location (Davenport, Iowa) and how it being linked to Pestilence in this episode makes sense, other location links to the end of the world, and the legend of Julia Brown.

Crowley turns up to help and they kidnap a demon named Brady who works for a pharmaceutical company and may know where Pestilence is. 

We discuss how much we love Crowley, how Brady is giving Patrick Bateman vibes, and the first time Sam gets called ‘Moose’.

We also discuss Sam’s plan to let Lucifer possess him, get annoyed on behalf of Sam for Bobby not believing in him, and talk about Dean’s hellhound PTSD.

We discuss Laura’s love of brotherly banter, the misrepresentation of the deities in this episode (especially Zao Shen), how in a different world Dean and Gabriel might actually be friends, and the disgusting final scene where we meet Pestilence.

We also discuss the amazing fight between Gabriel and Lucifer, why Sam and Dean would watch porn out in the middle of nowhere with their laptop on top of the car, and the idea that Gabriel gives them which will form the storyline for the rest of this season.
