Mulder breaks orders and drags Doggett into a case on a quarantined oil rig, where a worker has been killed and the official explanation doesn’t add up.
Once aboard, they discover something far worse than an industrial accident: the black oil is back, infecting the crew and turning the rig into a floating trap. Mulder knows exactly what they’re dealing with — but Doggett is still trying to process just how deep the X-Files really go.
As Scully works the science from the outside, Mulder and Doggett are forced to survive together, barricaded against an infected crew and racing to stop the oil from communicating with something beyond the rig.
