Introducing Doug and Phil DeGrave — twin graverobbers with a low reputation and even lower standards. They spend their nights getting wasted and digging six feet under, reclaiming wedding rings and gold teeth from corpses who had hoped to take them to the other side.

Unfortunately for them, the dead rarely stay buried.

The brothers constantly stumble into supernatural terror, facing zombies, witches, demons, curses, and things far older than any of those. Somehow they always claw their way back out of the grave long enough to drink another beer. Maybe it's luck. Maybe it's Pops and his questionable life lessons. Maybe it's the demon-possessed pistols. Who knows?

One cold, rain-soaked October night, the Oregon cemetery they were robbing spit up more trouble than most people see in ten lifetimes—and they are nowhere near prepared for what comes next.

Magnets for the macabre. Gluttons for ghouls. Morons.

Doug and Phil have been through things that would break most men. Things that can't be explained over a beer, though they've tried. They've come out the other side of every nightmare the Coldwater had to offer — changed, scraped up, and stubbornly alive.

None of it prepared them for what's underneath the cemetery.

What waits below is older than the inn, older than the Thorncrofts, older than anything the brothers have a word for. And somewhere in the middle of it is a child who needs to make it out alive.

Every woman at the Coldwater Inn has her secrets. Some more than others.

Phil is about to find out exactly how much he didn't know about the one he trusted most. It's going to hurt in ways that have nothing to do with the skinless thing tearing through the building.
The bazooka comes out. Stool, the senator in the horse mask, turns out to be the most useful person in the room.

When the smoke clears, the brothers get the full picture — an unholy family history, a century old conspiracy, and a Halloween night deadline that isn't moving for anybody. Everything they thought they knew about why they're here turns out to be wrong.

Can two dimwit grave robbers stand between an ancient goddess of death and decay and the one innocent soul she needs to complete her work?

The only way out of the Coldwater Inn is down.

What lies beneath is older than the inn, older than the town, and considerably more dangerous than anything the brothers have faced above ground. There are riddles with teeth. There are pirates — or what's left of them. There is a speakeasy, vintage lingerie, and a situation involving Doug and a yellow negligee that he will never fully live down.

Phil discovers what he's capable of when the alternative is considerably worse. Doug discovers that robbing the dead has a way of catching up with you.

They surface changed, cold, and considerably less dressed than when they went under.

But the real trouble isn't below the inn. It's been upstairs the whole time, wearing a friendly face and waiting patiently.

It's Halloween night. The clock is running. And the brothers are about to learn that sometimes the most dangerous thing in the room is the one holding the door open for you.

The trip is over. The brothers are alive. Technically.

Doug and Phil wake up changed in ways that are going to take some getting used to — matching holes in their foreheads included. Whatever happened in that haunted forest bathroom dimension appears to have worked. Pops' black book isn't gibberish anymore.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that being able to read it turns out to come with consequences nobody warned them about. Knowledge has a price. So does whatever is living inside them now.

There's something maritime about the horror this time — old, wet, and wrong in ways that feel like they've been waiting at the bottom of something dark for a very long time. The brothers are going to wish they'd stayed ignorant.

They won't get that option.
