Thank the Eight [and may they remain hidden] that The Raven Scholar continues to be one of the best books they’ve read this year. Parts 3-5 deepen some mysteries and resolve others, and serve up a bevy of challenges that, while uninteresting, offer our beloved characters plenty of opportunities to be their lovable selves.

DDDSpod has found a new obsession in The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson, a deeply clever and original fantasy novel. This Hugo shortlist-ee has it all–animal-aligned magic, a locked room murder mystery, centuries-long history and a feisty heroine who doesn't grate on a single nerve, unlike most popular #booktok protagonists. It's so engrossing William couldn't stop himself from reading twice the required reading.

DDDSpod is back on the outskirts of a freaky biopunk fantasy empire with their favorite detectives Ana and Din as they discuss A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett. When a treasury envoy from the empire to the Kingdom of Yarrow goes missing, Ana and Din find themselves going head to head with a serial killer, and uncovering some of the Empire's most carefully hidden secrets. It's twisty, turny, and they loved it.

But first... William and Jacob run into each other in a darkroo...er, both share their feelings about the hit horror film Backrooms.

William and Jacob are back after a brief break to discuss Fonda Lee's The Last Contract of Isako. Isthmus Isako is a corporate samurai on the brutal planet Aquilo, where your next pink slip could mean your head is literally on the chopping block. There are a lot of typical sci-fi things happening here, and it's a well-paced and well-written novel but...it doesn't quite work for your hosts, and they're not sure why. But they get the giggles trying to figure it out.

Natalie Heller Mills is the plastered-on smile behind a popular tradwife Instagram account whose perfect facade is beginning to crumble, especially when she wakes up in the 1850s. It’s thorny, it’s funny, it’s incredibly dark, surprisingly moving, and sharply written.
