Years ago, Toto Wolff and Mercedes sought to secure their domination into the next era of Formula 1, after the turbo hybrid era had run its course. For 2026, two teams would arrive with Audi and Honda power in F1. One would struggle immediately and prove the Austrian right...and one wouldn't as much. Audi don't act like a completely new operation, much bigger than the Sauber team they inherited.

Whilst glory isn't coming there imminently, Mattia Binotto and Neuberg have produced a power unit and operation which IS turning heads already. Hope for the future?

Of course, you may remember the guy who didn't wanna make friends...but right now? He's putting in a lot of work for Racing Bulls, just behind Max Verstappen in the championship. However, it's gone by without much notice. Sure, F1's got a lot on its plate right now but this fact is probably a very inconvenient situation for Red Bull and Laurent Mekies. If Max DOES leave Formula 1 or STAYS, a decision will have to be made regarding Lawson. A second chance incoming?

Word is that the FIA and teams realise these rules were too much, too soon. A 2.4 litre V8 turbo with synthetic fuels is currently the favourite amongst paddock gossip to replace the current hybrid setup for 2031...and yet that might not be good enough for some fans?

In any case, the last half a century might have shown that F1's engines? Whilst we love them, it all depends on what the big teams and engine makers want and are willing to make and sell. If they can make the V8 turbo work and profitable? They'll do it! Let's talk about how Renault started this all off.

In this current arc of F1, the Mercedes team principal has made plenty of moves to get a type of Formula 1 that his group could thrive under...and with nobody powerful left to stop him politically, within the rules provided from the sport and the FIA. In hindsight, did Christian Horner or a figure LIKE him keep Toto in check? With Horner gone, Wolff seems unchecked...and he's proven to be quite a terrifying figure; keen to divide and conquer rather than remain the stoic observer of the peak of their feud with Red Bull.

Whilst the tide IS turning back toward the 2026 regulations for Formula One being walked back, the framework is set. Was Christian right after all about these cars?

Upon reflection, Mercedes' plan to dominate Formula 1 in the long term was conceived back in 2019 with their entry into Formula E...where none of their current rivals back then were competing. From there, a series of actions set in motion their political moves to frame the F1 2026 regulations toward the current model. However, their domination has not been as clean as expected. Ferrari and McLaren have shown flashes of competitiveness...and now the FIA is ready to make their move...albeit after Oliver Bearman's crash.
