Whilst the FIA is busy working on tweaks to the 2026 regulations after testing and the Australian Grand Prix, Formula One's commercial arm is busy putting out fires or smoothing things over. On top of that, new graphics were shown for the race itself and they were...less detailed than usual. Was this a test...or something more permanent for 2026?

Thusly, it's brought to my mind a sense of the technical and commercial brains of Formula One not being in step with one another. Whilst the sport's governing body has a plan potentially ready for the Japanese Grand Prix, fans and drivers are speaking up about their concerns and takes. Is F1 listening? Hard to say.

The first race of the new F1 regulations weren't entirely terrible. Action at the start was mad! Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton immediately throwing their team into the equation...but it fell flat due to an overly cautious run plan...expecting Formula 1 to be less reliable than it ultimately was. Meanwhile, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli led the way with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar conking out at the start...the world champion Lando Norris? Stuck in fifth.

Who else won this first race of Formula One 2026 as well as lost or were just meh?

After months of waiting, the first F1 qualifying of 2026 got started and...it felt like opposite day! At least in terms of Red Bull. Whilst Max Verstappen was thrust into the barrier by his car, his teammate Isack Hadjar flew the flag for the team and ALMOST got said car on the front row...not quite enough to best the Mercedes of George Russell or Kimi Antonelli, but still a valiant effort.

Meanwhile, Ferrari faded over the session whilst McLaren had a decent showing with Oscar Piastri leading the way. Audi overachieved despite a reliability issue and Racing Bulls showed that the Ford powertrain of theirs has legs after all! What else could we get from this Formula 1 outing before the big day?

When it comes to Formula 1's introduction to the 2026 regulations, it was not as shaky as it could've been. CERTAINLY not as much as it was in 2014. Whilst reliability did have wobbles, the car sounded pretty much the same as before...and the sound of the pecking order seems to point towards a very close battle for the top spot in this weekend's Australian Grand Prix!

Whilst Ferrari maintained its place as one of the leading teams, Mercedes and McLaren dropped some of their sandbags and laid down their pace; McLaren's Oscar Piastri ESPECIALLY drawing attention. Max Verstappen and Red Bull? Not bad at all...with hopeful signs their second seat curse might be easing....and their new charge Arvid Lindblad making a very big impression.

Who else exceeding expectations? As well as matching or falling short of?

Adrian Newey shifts the focus away from the car...and onto Honda.

In a shocking twist, Aston Martin's team principal Adrian Newey conducted a press conference. There he laid his cards on the table and declared his car as unsafe (at least over a set period of laps as said by Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll). As a result, the focus has moved considerably! Whilst Honda has to find a solution, primarily, Newey also claims that if that weren't an issue, his car would already be capable of Q3. ALREADY. Sure, it's not winning races but for Aston? That's not bad to start.

And in all this? Fernando is the calmest one in the room. How things change.
