Most horror movies have a monster in them somewhere, even if that monster is human. But a classic creature feature takes deep, primal fears — the unknown, the dark, and everything that might be hiding there — and manifests them as grotesque beings that defy both science and nature. Some monsters, like aliens or vampires, are popular enough to form sub-genres unto themselves. Depending on the film, the beast might be the bizarre result of an experiment gone wrong, the mutant manifestation of Mother Nature run amok, a folkloric creature brought into the real world, or something that's beyond all classification. Slasher villains (e.g., Michael Myers) and serial killers (e.g., Hannibal Lecter), or otherwise relatively human monsters have also been omitted—we believe these icons belong in categories of their own. Finally, not all the movie monsters in this ranking are bad.
