At first, it was easy to ignore. A knock at the front door late at night, just clear enough to get someone’s attention, but never followed by anyone actually being there. In an older building, that kind of thing didn’t feel out of place, and for a while, it was treated like nothing more than another quirk of the space.
But it didn’t stop.
Over time, the way it happened started to feel less random. It wasn’t louder or more frequent, just consistent in a way that made it harder to dismiss. People began to notice that it didn’t always behave the same way, and the small differences were what made it harder to explain.
By the time it finally changed, the explanations didn’t hold anymore. And when they eventually moved into a new building, they expected it to be over. It wasn’t.
