    295. Teen Screen Time: How to Set Limits Without Constant Power Struggles

    08-09-2026 | 13 Min.
You tell your teen it’s time to put the phone away.
    They say, “I’m almost done.”
Ten minutes later, you’re asking again.
And suddenly you’re no longer talking about a phone.
You’re arguing about fairness, trust, independence, and whether you’re “too controlling.”
If screen-time limits keep turning into nightly power struggles, the answer may not be a bigger consequence.
It may be a clearer plan.
In this episode of the Single Parenting Reset Show, Tess Connolly, LCSW, explains how to set screen-time boundaries that are clear, predictable, and easier to enforce without getting pulled into endless arguments.
You’ll learn why trying to create the boundary during the conflict usually makes things worse — and what to do instead.
Tess walks you through a simple three-step reset you can use with tweens and teens:
    1. Set the limit outside the conflict.
    2. Make the expectation concrete.
    3. When your teen pushes back, use fewer words.
    You’ll also learn Tess’s simple:
    Acknowledge. Limit. Choice.
framework for responding when your teen argues about a phone or screen boundary.
Instead of explaining, defending, lecturing, or negotiating your way through another screen-time fight, you’ll have clear language to use.
    Try:
    “I hear that you’re frustrated.”
“The phone still parks at 10.”
“You can plug it in now, or take two minutes to finish what you’re doing and plug it in yourself.”
Your teenager may still dislike the boundary.
    That’s okay.
The goal isn’t to make your teen happy about every limit.
The goal is to create boundaries they can understand, predict, and eventually learn to manage themselves.
Because connection before correction does not mean parenting without limits.
You can protect the relationship and still be the parent.

    294. What to Say When Your Teen Says, “You Can’t Make Me”

    03-09-2026 | 11 Min.
Your teenager looks you in the eye and says:
    “You can’t make me.”
Those four words can make a parent feel as though their authority is being tested—and that they need to win the moment immediately.
But responding with “Oh, yes I can” usually turns the original issue into a power struggle. Now the conflict is no longer about the phone, chore, curfew, or family expectation. It’s about who will back down first.
In this Quick Reset, Tess gives you a calmer and more effective response:
“I’m not going to physically force you. The expectation is still ______. If you choose not to do it, ______ will happen. I’ll give you a minute.”
You’ll learn how to communicate the boundary, offer your teen appropriate responsibility for their choice, and step away without giving up your parental authority.
    In this episode, you’ll learn:
Why “You can’t make me” pulls parents into a power struggle
The exact script to use instead of saying “Oh, yes I can”
Why fewer words and a lower voice are more effective
How to choose a related, reasonable, and enforceable outcome
What to say if your teen keeps arguing
Why your teen’s immediate reaction is not the best measure of whether your response worked
When a situation requires protective action rather than a communication script

The goal is not to overpower your teenager or force them to agree with you.
The goal is to stay grounded, hold the boundary, and protect the relationship while you follow through.
Because the relationship is the intervention—and connection and authority can exist at the same time.

    293. Disrespectful Teenager? What to Do Before You Give a Consequence

    01-09-2026 | 23 Min.
Your teenager rolls their eyes, insults you, says “whatever,” or slams the door—and your entire body reacts.
    You immediately think:
They cannot speak to me this way.
So you take the phone, cancel the weekend, or announce a punishment. But now the original problem has disappeared, and you are trapped in an even bigger power struggle about the consequence.
Teen disrespect should not be ignored, but it does not always require an immediate punishment.
In this episode of The Single Parenting Reset Show, Tess Connolly, LCSW, explains what to do during the critical moments before deciding on a consequence.
You’ll learn how to distinguish between a dysregulated teenager, a teenager using disrespect to avoid a responsibility, and harmful behavior that requires repair or a consequence.
Tess walks you through the three-part Before-Consequence Check:
    Pause your reaction.
    Sort the behavior.
    Choose the response.
    You’ll also learn:
Why pausing does not weaken your parental authority
How to address disrespect without losing the original boundary
When to ask your teenager for a communication redo
How to require repair without demanding a forced apology
When a consequence is genuinely necessary
How to make consequences connected, proportionate, and enforceable
What to say when your teenager refuses to continue the conversation
You’ll leave with practical scripts you can use during real conflicts—not simply ideas that sound good when everyone is calm.

    292. What to Say When Your Teen Shuts You Out: 5 Scripts That Keep the Door Open

    27-08-2026 | 18 Min.
Your teen walks through the door, barely looks at you, and heads straight to their room.
    You ask what happened.
    They say, “Nothing.”
    You try again.
They answer, “I’m fine. Just leave me alone.”
For many parents, especially single parents carrying the emotional weight of the family, this moment can feel deeply personal. You may worry that your teen no longer trusts you or that the distance between you is becoming permanent.
The more worried you become, the more questions you may ask. But when your teen is overwhelmed, embarrassed, ashamed, angry, or simply unable to put an experience into words, repeated questions can feel like pressure.
Giving your teen space does not mean ignoring them. Staying connected does not require forcing them to talk.
The goal is to show your teen:
    I notice you.
I care about what is happening.
I can respect your need for space.
    I will not emotionally disappear.
I am available when you are ready.

In this Quick Reset episode, you’ll learn five scripts to use when your teen shuts you out:
What to say when your teen refuses to talk.
How to name what you notice without assuming you know what happened.
How to ask whether they want listening, help, or space.
How to check for safety without demanding every detail.
How to give space while creating a clear time to reconnect.

Tess also shares concrete parent-and-teen examples, what to do when you have already pushed too hard, and why a conversation that doesn’t happen immediately can still represent parenting progress.
If this episode helped you, follow the show and share it with another parent who may need these words today.
    The relationship is the intervention.

    291. Teen Won’t Talk to You? How to Help Them Open Up Without Pushing

    25-08-2026 | 25 Min.
Your teen comes home, closes their bedroom door, and gives you one-word answers.
You ask how their day was.
    “Fine.”
    You ask whether anything happened.
    “No.”
You ask if they are upset with you.
“I don’t know. Can you please leave me alone?”
You are asking because you care—but the more you try to get your teen talking, the further away they seem to move.
Teen silence can trigger enormous fear in a parent. You may worry that something is wrong, that your teen no longer trusts you, or that your relationship is slipping away.
This can feel especially intense when you are parenting alone or carrying most of the emotional responsibility for your family. There may not be another adult beside you to help hold the worry, so you understandably try harder to get information.
But your teen may experience those repeated questions as pressure, monitoring, or an expectation to talk before they are ready.
Their silence does not automatically mean they do not love you or need you. Sometimes it means they are overwhelmed, embarrassed, tired, afraid of a reaction, or still trying to understand their own feelings.
In this episode, you will learn:
Why teenagers often shut down with the people they love most
How your own fear can unintentionally create more pressure
Why asking fewer questions can sometimes lead to more communication
How to create low-pressure opportunities for connection
What to do when your teen shares one small piece of information
How advice, fixing, and lectures can close the door again
How to repair the pattern if conversations have become tense
When teen withdrawal may require more direct attention and support

The goal is not to find the perfect question that makes your teen tell you everything.
The goal is to become the parent with whom your teen feels safe bringing the difficult things.
