Christians in much of the world today face pressures. Few, however, face anything as intense as those Christians who lived under the first few decades of authoritarian rule in either the Soviet Union or Communist China. At least not yet.
While freedom and opportunity still remains, Christians today would be wise to consider the experiences of Christians under the Soviets and Chinese Communists. Though both situations shared many similarities, they developed in starkly different manners. Why did they differ so much? What lessons can we glean and apply in our own situations? And what cautionary flags can we recognize and avoid?
On this encore episode of the Christian Emergency Podcast, Andy examines a helpful case study of the Christian experience under the Soviets and Chinese. This comparison, produced originally by Nik Ripken in his book The Insanity of Obedience, provides many helpful insights for Christians today.

Christianity has exploded inside Iran over recent decades. But that growth has been met by a severe response from the Islamic regime. What is it like to be a Christian in Iran? How does the Gospel of Jesus Christ continue to be proclaimed when the persecution climate is so intense?
Mansour Borji, of Article 18, joins Andy on this episode of the Christian Emergency Podcast to answer these questions and more. Mansour grew up in Iran as an unbeliever, but after hearing the Gospel he gave his life to Christ. As a young Christian under a hostile government, Mansour saw the fallout of persecution decades ago. Since that time, he has sought to train up and champion Christians inside Iran.

Faith Cha’s mother and grandmother fled North Korea for their lives. Miraculously, they survived the violence when many around them did not. Not only did they survive, but God crossed their paths with Christians who helped them.
These believers—normal people of no renown—played huge roles in the lives of these women by small acts of kindness and grace. These blessings not only helped these women fleeing North Korea, but also the next generation. Faith herself was richly blessed by kind Christians who loved and encouraged her as a refugee kid, confused in a strange, new country.
Through this journey and divine interactions, a spiritual legacy was born. In time, Faith and her husband carried forth that spiritual legacy in surprising, but fitting, ways. They crossed the globe to make Christ known to Muslims in Central Asia. And today they help others minister to refugees, just as others once helped her frightened mom and grandma.
Be encouraged. This testimony reminds us that even our smallest acts of kindness can make powerful impacts in the lives of others. God can use them to transform lives, families, communities and even generations.
