From 2016 to 2018, Andrew Brunson struggled inside Turkish prisons. For the previous 23 years, the American and his wife had served as missionaries with Turkey’s small Christian community. But when he was imprisoned on false charges – and then pondered the very real prospect that he would be separated from his family for the rest of his life – Andrew descended into spiritual crisis.
In today’s episode, Andrew provides a raw look into the emotional turmoil that gripped him behind bars. Doubts and despair haunted him. Silence and sadness assaulted his senses. But God was at work drawing prayer towards the nation of Turkey.  As much as he was broken down, Andrew eventually sensed he was being built back up. What was God up to?

God is moving in these days. One way He is advancing His gospel is through international Christian missions. If you’vespent any time looking into Christian missions, you’ve likely heard about movements – like Church Planting Movements (CPM) or Disciple Making Movements (DMM).
As exciting as it is to hear of movements of people to Christ, the methodology has been questioned by some in the missions community. What are these movements and why is there controversy? Are movements novel strategies grounded in pragmatism? Or is there a biblical foundation that seeks to foster church networks to remain on the move while discipling new believers?
Joining the Christian Emergency Podcast to answer these questions and more is Wes Watkins, a missionary, seminaryprofessor, writer and missiologist. Wes has served on the missions field under challenging circumstances, and he’s drunk deeply from the intellectual well of missions theology and practice for decades. He offers a theological defense of the movements model. He does so recognizing that it is not perfect, and that other missions strategies and church models are also helpful for the Kingdom.

Christians in much of the world today face pressures. Few, however, face anything as intense as those Christians who lived under the first few decades of authoritarian rule in either the Soviet Union or Communist China. At least not yet.
