These are four documentaries that capture the early 21st century’s evolving concerns about what the internet is doing to us: empowering fraudsters, obliterating our privacy, rotting our brains, destroying truth, and – eventually – emboldening fascists.

Internet Movies, Episode 3 | A Vision of Horror

    20-02-2026 | 1 u. 41 Min.
Welcome to Internet Movies. You've logged into the third episode.
    Be careful what you open.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Japanese filmmakers saw the horrors of the internet first – namely, Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Satoshi Kon. The latter understood the internet perhaps more deeply than any filmmaker of his time, and it’s a pity he didn’t live to help us understand it for much longer.

Introducing our new series: Internet Movies

    02-02-2026 | 1 u. 3 Min.
    Cinematary is back!
After nearly a year of being dormant following our 500th episode, the gang is back with our new series: Internet Movies.
    Here's what to expect:
A vision for our first post-500 series: seven episodes, each centered around a particular aspect of the internet and loosely grouped by historical time period to trace the evolution of both the internet itself and its differing cinematic representations.

Before we get to that first episode, enjoy our chat from our monthly Patreon series, Movies We Watch This Month. In August, we discussed Eddington and felt like this would be a good primer for what you can expect with the series. Looking for more from Cinematary? Consider joining our Patreon for $5 and get bonus content.

First episode will drop on Feb. 6 with a new episode every week after.
