    French artist Nathalie Muchamad, of Indonesian descent, integrates global history and personal memory within her artistic practice to critically examine the historical role of the European slave trade in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as well as the ways in which colonialism and migration have shaped her family history. Muchamad reflects on her family’s experience as forced labourers in New Caledonia, contrasting the island’s ongoing struggle for independence with the political and social realities of Mayotte, where she currently lives and works. In this episode, she also addresses the devastating impact of a recent cyclone in Mayotte, offering a critical assessment of the French government’s inadequate disaster response and its long-standing, systemic neglect of overseas territories. Through installation, narrative strategies, and speculative fiction, Muchamad’s practice seeks to recover marginalised or erased histories, including the global displacement of plants and people within the plantation economy. By foregrounding the intertwined botanical and human costs of imperial expansion, her work engages with collective memories that remain absent from official historical narratives. We invite listeners to delve into Muchamad’s artistic practice and to reflect on questions of temporality, displacement, and historical responsibility within the complex terrain of global history.

    Nathalie Muchamad is a French visual artist born in Nouméa, New Caledonia. She currently lives and works in Mayotte, a French overseas territory in the Comoros archipelago. Working across textiles, smell, video, drawing, text, and installation, Muchamad investigates the concept of multiplicity within a globally connected and multipolar world. Her practice examines the historical role of the European slave trade in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, while also engaging with her own family history, shaped by displacement resulting from colonisation and systems of contract labour on coffee plantations.

    Asli Seven is an independent curator, researcher and writer based between Istanbul and Paris. Her research and curatorial projects focus on art, ecology and social change through studies around diaspora and displacement, infrastructures, landscape, pedagogy and performativity of documents, with an emphasis on fieldwork, ficto-criticism and co-creation. Since 2014 she has collaborated as curator and writer with museums, foundations, public galleries, residency programs and non-profit spaces in Turkey, France, Spain, UK, UAE, the US, the Philippines and Taiwan.

    Merv Espina is an artist and researcher. He has exhibited, intervened and performed in ad-hoc and informal initiatives, as well as institutions and the occasional perennial art event, like Jakarta Biennale 2015, Yokohama Triennial 2020, and Colomboscope 2024. He is a curator for WSK Festival of the Recently Possible (est. 2008), a sound and media art festival. WSK co-initiated Nusasonic (2018-2022), a platform for sound cultures research and experimental music exchange between Europe and Southeast Asia. Until 2020, he was curator and program director of artist-run space Green Papaya Art Projects (est. 2000).

    Connecting the Indian Ocean World examines the many overlapping linkages that existed from the early modern period and into the colonial era. It offers a clear understanding of the economic networks that extended across the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic during the 19th century. With a critical historical lens, the volume discusses themes like the opium trade in the Malay-Indonesian Archipelago – the biggest opium trade market at the time; the Safavid mission to Siam; and the economic relationship between Pondicherry and West Africa, via France.

    Radhika retired as Professor and Head of the Department of History, Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly the University of Pune). She is now Visiting Faculty at the Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts, Pune. Within the broad area of medieval Indian history, her research focuses on trade, especially in textiles, and maritime networks.

    Ryuto Shimada
    Ryuto is associate professor, Department of Asian History, Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology, The University of Tokyo. he has published extensively in Japanese and in English on aspects of the networks of the Indian Ocean world in the early modern age.

    Dr Derek Sheridan is an anthropologist whose research examines global imaginaries within South-South political-economic contexts. His work investigates Afro-Asian connections, with a particular focus on trading dynamics, interpersonal relations, and narratives of nationhood and culture. His ongoing project explores Afro-Asian cultural exchange, specifically the historical trajectories of East Asian martial arts in East Africa and their significance in Tanzanian filmmaking and embodied practices. His forthcoming book, "Chinese Migrants and the Interpersonal Ethics of Global Inequality in Tanzania", draws on 17 months of ethnographic fieldwork and critically analyses Chinese-Tanzanian relations through the lenses of migration, trade, and ethical engagement.

    Audrey Albert is currently based in Manchester after studying photography at the Manchester Metropolitan University between 2015 – 2018. Her main creative mediums are digital and analog photography. Audrey’s main body of work Matter Out of Place sheds a light on an unfair and shameful page of Mauritian and British history in which the entire population of The Chagos Archipelago was forcefully displaced from their homeland due to political agendas between 1968 – 1973.
