The definitive feminist analysis of reproductive and ‘caring’ labor to emerge from Italian feminism of the 1970s.

Emerging from the great social upheavals that contested the sexual and racial divisions of labor globally in the 1970s, Leopoldina Fortunati’s classic work expands and transforms how we analyze the sphere of reproduction, redefining the value of the individual’s life and the labor performed in the home.

Released here for the first time in its unabridged form with historical notation and contemporary commentary, The Arcana of Reproduction: Housewives, Prostitutes, Workers and Capital (Verso, 2025) is a foundational text and essential contribution to today’s discussions of social reproduction and the history of Italian feminism. Fortunati’s work provides some of the earliest theorizations of ‘immaterial,’ ‘affective,’ and ‘caring’ labor, and of the role of technology in reproduction, articulated decades before their popular reception in English academic literature. Reading this work some 50 years after its original publication gives us the tools to analyze the contemporary state of capitalist development and of women’s lives today. The text remains prefigurative and essential in our era of digital labor.

Leopoldina Fortunati was a core member of Lotta Femminsta and the Wages for Housework Movement internationally. Along with Mariarosa Dalla Costa, Selma James and Silvia Federici, she composed many of the group’s core theoretical and political texts. Her early work continues to inform movements concerned with struggles over reproduction globally and in subsequent work as a theorist of media and technology, Fortunati has been at the vanguard of contemporary theory addressing the relation between gendered labor and technology.

The Kiss: A History of Passion and Power (Reaktion, 2026) by Professor Katie Barclay tells the surprising history of our most intimate gesture: the kiss. Richly illustrated, it explores a millennium of kisses, asking how and why the kiss has retained its power over the centuries, and what it might mean today. From the furtive kisses of fated lovers Heloise and Abelard to The Godfather’s ‘kiss of death’, Professor Barclay shows how the kiss can be romantic, peaceful, transgressive, intimate, erotic and more. There are kisses that are bad ideas, dangerous kisses and funny ones. New kisses are invented and old ones fall out of favour. 

While the kiss continues to change, Professor Barclay shows that we kiss fewer people, and less often, than we used to. The Kiss reveals a cultural inheritance transmitted in story and song, art and literature, and through the everyday kisses that we receive from our parents, or reserve for our lovers; when we kiss, we kiss with the weight of history.

In 1905, when Broadway was already the most famous thoroughfare in
New York City, a recreational photographer from Newark, New Jersey named
Charles Gilbert Hine set out to document the street’s entire length.

Taking
pictures from downtown Bowling Green and its skyscrapers to uptown
Inwood with its fields and wildflowers, Hine depicted a Broadway
animated by the presence of the past and the relentless pressures of
change.

Through his lens appear shanties, brownstones and country houses;
horse-drawn wagons and trolley cars; downtown sex workers and uptown
famers.

Hines’ photographs lingered in the collection of the New York
Historical until they were discovered by Nick Yablon, a professor of
history and American Studies at the University of Iowa.

Now they appear in Nick’s new book, From the Skyscraper to the Wildflower: C.G. Hine’s 1905 Photographic Survey of Broadway (Columbia University Press, 2026).

Combining
Hines’ photographs with his own analysis, along with maps and other
images, Nick has produced an illuminating book that depicts Broadway,
its peoples, its buildings, and the many neighborhoods that Broadway
traverses, at a distinct moment in time.

Grounded in empirical studies, this book is both a history of the
emergence of feminist jurisprudence in post-colonial India and a model
of innovative legal research. The book inaugurates a creative practice
of scholarly activism that engages a new way of thinking about law and
feminist jurisprudence, one that is geared to acknowledge and take
responsibility for the hierarchies in Indian academic practices. Its
method of conversation and accountability continues the feminist
tradition of taking reciprocity and the time and place of collaboration
seriously. It helps make visible the specific ties between post-colonial
life and law and joins the work of refusing and reimagining the
hierarchical formation of legal knowledge in a caste-based Indian
society. A significant contribution to the history and practice of
feminist jurisprudence in post-colonial India, A Jurisprudence of Conversations: Law, Life and Feminism in Post-colonial India (Cambridge University Press, 2026) will appeal to both an academic and activist readership.

Molly Brookfield’s book, Watching the Girls Go By: A History of Street Harassment in the United States (University of North Carolina Press, 2026) explores
the historical, legal, and cultural history of street harassment in the
United States. Historically, Brookfield identified the "masher panic"
(late 19th–early 20th century) when reformers and municipalities labeled
male accosting of women a public problem and enacted anti-masher
ordinances or applied disorderly-conduct laws. On law and policy, the
book highlights primarily local legal responses against harassment, with
municipal codes and reinterpretations of existing ordinances more
common than coherent federal action that criminalizes mashing.

In Watching the Girls Go By,
street harassment is situated on a continuum with other gendered and
sexualized violence, with the argument that street harassment normalizes
and underpins more extreme harms against women. The book portrays
historical scholarly perspectives to street harassment including those
of Cheryl Bernard and Edith Schlaffler. Also, the book builds on diverse
historical sources and employs varying terms for similar behaviors. The
author uses "intrusive behaviors" as a more precise analytic category
while preserving period-specific terms when discussing particular
historical contexts.
