You may not realize you are burning out because you are still getting things done.
Hidden burnout can look like constantly running behind, struggling to relax, getting sick as soon as vacation begins, scrolling long after you meant to go to bed, or feeling mentally foggy when you try to hear God. It is not always caused by a demanding career either. Motherhood, caregiving, ministry, emotional pain, and continually saying yes can place the same kind of stress on your body.
In this conversation, physician psychiatrist and Christian educator Dr. Ioana Popa explains why burnout can remain hidden while you still feel productive. We talk about how chronic stress affects your body, mind, emotions, and connection with God, and why slowing down is not selfish, lazy, or a failure.
You'll learn:
How to recognize the subtle signs of hidden burnout before you completely crash
Why brain fog, confusion, and emotional overload can make hearing God's voice feel harder
How sleep, water, movement, stillness, and daily recovery help your nervous system reset
Why Christian helpers may feel guilty setting boundaries or caring for themselves
How to create small, consistent rhythms of renewal that are simple enough to maintain
Dr. Ioana reminds us that the goal is not to begin another overwhelming routine. Start with the smallest rhythm you can consistently repeat, even if that means sitting quietly with God for only three minutes.
Scripture
"Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer." Luke 5:16 NLT
Jesus did not respond to every need by continually pushing Himself harder. He intentionally withdrew, rested, prayed, and reconnected with the Father.
Prayer
Father, show me where I have mistaken constant productivity for faithfulness. Help me recognize the signals my body, soul, and spirit have been sending. Release me from guilt when I need to rest, say no, or create space to be with You. Quiet the noise within me so I can recognize Your voice, receive Your peace, and serve from renewal instead of exhaustion. In Jesus' name, amen.
Declaration
God, You said that Jesus often withdrew to pray. Therefore, I am allowed to slow down, and I will create space to rest and hear Your voice. I do not have to earn Your love through exhaustion. Heather, you are allowed to rest, and you will live and serve from the peace of God.
