Welcome to this extra episode of the Leaders in Finance Podcast, recorded live after the third Leaders in Finance Compliance Event at the H’ART Museum in Amsterdam, where over 100 participants from more than 50 organisations came together to discuss the future of compliance in financial services, with a particular focus on AI, technology and crypto.

Host Kees de Wit reflects on the day’s key themes together with Leanne Joseph (moderator of the event), Tom van de Laar (Head of Financial Crime Compliance & Deputy Chief Compliance Officer, Rabobank), and Pieter van Doorn (Partner, Deloitte).

Together, they discuss how rapidly developing technologies are changing the compliance profession, whether AI could eventually replace parts of the compliance function, and why human judgement will remain essential. They also reflect on the rise of crypto and neobanks, the impact of regulation such as MiCAR, and the continuing tension between innovation and effective oversight. And looking ahead: how can financial institutions, regulators and other public and private parties work together more effectively, build trust and respond with greater urgency to a rapidly changing financial landscape?

Anneka Treon’s original appearance became the most-listened-to episode in the history of the Leaders in Finance Podcast. In this new ten-minute edit, Jeroen Broekema revisits some of its most memorable moments.

Anneka talks about growing up as a competitive chess player and a self-described nerd, what first drew her to financial services, and the striking cultural differences between the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. She also reflects on ambition, competition and why building a career is ultimately a marathon, not a sprint.

At the time of the original recording, Anneka worked at Van Lanschot Kempen. She has since joined ING, where she leads its global wealth management business.

Daniele Tonella is Chief Technology Officer and a member of ING’s Management Board Banking. Since August 2024, he has been responsible for ING’s global technology landscape and advises the Management Board on technology-driven business opportunities. As he puts it, his role covers almost everything at ING that contains “a chip or a line of code.”

He leads a global technology organisation of around 20,000 employees. His responsibilities include the reliability and security of ING’s systems, engineering productivity, the transition to scalable global technology platforms and cloud-native architecture, and innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence.

Before joining ING, Daniele was Group Chief Information Officer at UniCredit and CEO of UniCredit Services. Earlier in his career, he led AXA Technology Services, served as Global CIO at Evalueserve, held technology and operations leadership roles at Swiss Life, and worked in consulting at Mercer Management Consulting and McKinsey & Company.

Daniele grew up in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland and studied engineering at ETH Zurich. He later completed executive education programmes at Harvard, IMD, INSEAD and MIT Sloan. Daniele is 54, is married, lives in Switzerland and has four children.

In this conversation, Daniele discusses what it takes to lead technology at scale, why AI can turn “garbage in, garbage out” into “garbage in, disaster out,” and how ING balances innovation with standardisation, security and resilience. He also reflects on his leadership style, the future of junior engineers, technological sovereignty, introversion, family life and his lifelong desire to build things.

Frits Moonen is oprichter en managing partner van Momentum Family Office, een onafhankelijk multi-family office dat vermogende ondernemers en families adviseert over de inrichting, bescherming en overdracht van hun vermogen. Sinds de oprichting in 2019 is Momentum uitgegroeid tot een van de snelst groeiende onafhankelijke family offices van Nederland. 

Voordat hij Momentum oprichtte, werkte Frits bij ING. Hij begon er als trainee en groeide door tot private banker. Daar ontstond zijn overtuiging dat onafhankelijk financieel advies en productverkoop strikt gescheiden zouden moeten zijn. Vanuit die visie richtte hij zijn eigen onderneming op. 

Frits behaalde een master Bedrijfskunde aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Hij is 36 jaar en woont in Amsterdam

In deze extra aflevering van Leaders in Finance spreekt Jeroen Broekema met Hadewych Kuiper, Managing Director en lid van de Management Board van Triodos Investment Management.

Hadewych vertelt hoe haar Groningse achtergrond, haar werk als consultant en een bewuste keuze om niet voor British American Tobacco naar Hongkong te gaan haar uiteindelijk bij Triodos brachten. Ze begon er in 2008, vlak voordat de financiële crisis uitbrak, en zag van dichtbij waarom het verschil maakt om precies te weten waar geld terechtkomt.

Triodos Investment Management beheert inmiddels ruim €6 miljard. Hoe selecteer je bedrijven die echt bijdragen aan de energie-, voedsel- en circulariteitstransitie of aan menselijk en maatschappelijk welzijn? Waarom belegt Triodos wel in Vestas, maar niet in Tesla? En hoe combineer je impact met harde rendementseisen?

Ook gaat het over engagement met bedrijven, microfinanciering, institutionele beleggers, actieve ETF’s en de ambitie om door te groeien naar €10 miljard. Want voor Hadewych gaat het niet alleen om financing change, maar ook om changing finance.
